Ricky
Martin's songwriter adds note of caution to "crossover"
label
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - While thousands of teenaged girls in Toronto were scrambling to catch a glimpse of Ricky Martin during his weekend visit, one of his major collaborators was sounding a note of caution.
Until recently, Ricky Martin only released albums in Spanish. He's now one of the hottest things in pop music internationally because of the success of his new English-language album and his hit song, Livin' La Vida Loca.
Martin is being talked of as a great "crossover"
success. However, the man who writes most of Ricky Martin's songs,
Robi Rosa, says "there's a bit of racism" in this
notion.
Rosa says Ricky Martin can't be considered a true crossover until more Americans are listening to his songs in Spanish. Rosa says he's sad that Martin's previous work in Spanish, including his breakthrough album Vuelve, has largely been ignored by his fans in North America.
